Our Story

A School Built by Community

The Volcanes Community School was founded to respond to a simple but urgent need: children cannot learn if they are hungry, unsupported, or without opportunity. What began as a small act of service has grown into a community-centered school made possible by families, volunteers, and partners who believe in education as a path to dignity and hope.

The Beginning

The Volcanes Project began in 1998 as a feeding program located near the city dump, serving close to 1,000 children living in extreme poverty.

At the time, many children were attending school hungry or not attending at all. The immediate focus was simple: provide food so children could survive and begin to learn.

Growing Into a School

As the program evolved, education became a central focus. Classes were offered before and after the regular school day, often in borrowed and overcrowded spaces.

A major turning point came when a former elementary school building was donated. This gift provided a permanent home and allowed the program to expand into what is now The Volcanes Community School.

Education Beyond the Classroom

From the beginning, the school understood that education is more than academics. Many students required nutritional support, mentorship, and a safe place to learn and grow.

Over time, programs expanded to include daily meals, music education, scholarships, mentorship, and adult learning opportunities—strengthening not only students, but entire families.

Community at the Center

The Volcanes Community School is sustained through collaboration. Volunteer mothers prepare meals, parents participate actively, graduates return as mentors, and local and international partners contribute time, knowledge, and resources.

Visiting professors from Fort Hays State University, Rotary Clubs, partner schools, and local businesses have all played an essential role in the school’s development.

Learning, Evaluated and Strengthened

An external evaluation conducted by the Seaver Foundation confirmed the positive impact of the school’s programs. As a result, key improvements were implemented, including access to school counseling services, clean drinking water, and strengthened nutritional support.

These changes helped ensure that students could learn in a healthier, more supportive environment.

Looking Forward

Today, The Volcanes Community School continues to grow alongside the community it serves. Every program, partnership, and success story is rooted in the belief that education can change lives—not just for one child, but for generations.

This school exists because people chose to care—and because a community chose to believe in its children.
