MEET THE FOUNDER
Arthur Fumerton
Arthur “Art” Fumerton was a man guided by a deep and unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. He saw in every child not just their present circumstances, but their potential—the possibility of a different future shaped by knowledge, confidence, and opportunity. Art approached his work with humility and quiet determination, driven not by recognition, but by a genuine desire to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
He believed wholeheartedly that education could break the cycle of poverty, and that belief became the foundation of everything he built. Art’s legacy is not only found in the school itself, but in the lives of the students who have gone on to dream bigger, reach further, and create new possibilities for themselves and their families. His vision continues to inspire, reminding us that one person’s commitment to education can ripple outward, changing countless lives for generations to come.
Growing Into a School
The Volcanes Project began in 1998 as a feeding program located near the city dump, serving close to 1,000 children living in extreme poverty.
At the time, many children were attending school hungry or not attending at all. The immediate focus was simple: provide food so children could survive and begin to learn.
As the program evolved, education became a central focus. Classes were offered before and after the regular school day, often in borrowed and overcrowded spaces.
A major turning point came when a former elementary school building was donated. This gift provided a permanent home and allowed the program to expand into what is now The Volcanes Community School.
Community at the Center
The Volcanes Community School is sustained through collaboration. Parents participate actively, graduates return as mentors, and local and international partners contribute time, knowledge, and resources.
Visiting professors from Fort Hays State University, Rotary Clubs, partner schools, and local businesses have all played an essential role in the school’s development.
Education Beyond the Classroom
From the beginning, the school understood that education is more than academics. Many students required nutritional support, mentorship, and a safe place to learn and grow.
Over time, programs expanded to include music education, scholarships, mentorship, and adult learning opportunities—strengthening not only students, but entire families.
"This school exists because people chose to care—and because a community chose to believe in its children."
